Dr. Katie Yensen is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, treating knee, shoulder, and hip injuries with arthroscopic surgery and shoulder replacement. Her goal is to understand what matters most to you and help you return to the activities you enjoy.
Dr. Katie Yensen is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. She earned her medical degree from The George Washington University School of Medicine and completed her orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Southern California, followed by a fellowship in sports orthopaedic surgery at Northwestern University.
Dr. Yensen treats a broad range of sports-related injuries and conditions, including knee ligament tears, meniscal injuries, patellar instability, cartilage injuries, rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability and arthritis, hip labral tears, and femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). Her surgical expertise includes arthroscopic procedures of the shoulder, hip, and knee, as well as shoulder replacement surgery. Throughout her training, she gained extensive experience providing team coverage and on-field care for athletes at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels, including Northwestern University Athletics, the Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago Blackhawks.
Dr. Yensen maintains an active interest in orthopaedic research, with a particular focus on injury prevention and optimizing return to sport following surgery. She has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and has presented her research at national meetings. She is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society.
Dr. Yensen’s approach to patient care is informed by her extensive experience as a competitive athlete. Before medical school, she played Division I soccer at Virginia Tech and went on to play professional soccer internationally. Outside of medicine, she enjoys staying active through distance running, road cycling, swimming, and surfing. She competes in full and half Ironman triathlons and has completed eight marathons.
Dr. Yensen believes that successful treatment begins with understanding each patient’s individual goals and priorities. She works closely with her patients to develop personalized treatment plans, whether that means nonsurgical care, rehabilitation, or surgery. Her goal is to help each patient return to the activities they enjoy and achieve the highest level of function possible.
